The new shirt I designed for Calabrese has officially been released and you can buy it HERE. It is the "Summon the Beyond" shirt, inspired by one of the tracks off of their new album, "Calabrese III: They Call Us Death," which is one of the raddest fucking albums I have heard in a long time. Highly recommend their entire discography, to be honest. Anyhow, posted are a few of the colorways including the ethereal blue option they ended up choosing (wisely, I think.)

Here is a bunch of work that I have been doing for various bands, including local Minneapolis acts Hardcore Crayons and Guzzlemug, and the ever impressive Arizona-based horror rock band CALABRESE! All three of these bands are an absolute blast to work with, and you should all check them out and buy their music.

After an incredibly long hiatus, I am back to blogging. After moving across the country, again, and reentering an old life back here in the 612, well, reentry is a nasty bitch.

I will soon post a much more comprehensive viewing of the illustration work/news that has happened over the long silence. However, right now I am here to tell you all about a gallery show of new works by the amazing Karen O and myself that opens this Friday, Feb. 5th, at the Rogue Buddah Gallery here in Murderapolis, Minnesnowta.

Opens @ 7pm, tons of cheap beer and wine, kickass art, and even better company. So, below are our artist statements, and then you will find some photos of a few of my pieces in the show.

Karen O'Bryan and RM Hanson share something other than being a couple, they share a creative spirit. Hanson's monsters and grotesque images compliment O'Bryan's subtle and delicate imagery in this, their first exhibit together. "Till Death Do Us Part", which takes place during the month of love, celebrates the many facets of relationships, the good, the bad, the beautiful and the ugly, but most importantly, the creative.

Karen O’Bryan Artist Statement:
Inspiration comes from everywhere. The town you grew up in, an expedition abroad, from friends and loved ones, even the subconscious. I have always been very interested in dreams, dream analysis and remembering bizarre events from adventures had inside the mind.

Not only am I interested in the scenes my own mind creates each night, I love hearing other people's dreams as well. Recently, a friend of mine told me he dreamt we were at a costume party together. He was dressed as a lion, but he couldn't remember what I went as.

From his short story, I imagined what this costume party could've looked like, and my work quickly evolved into depicting images of people in masks. I have been using the underlining plot in his dream as my canvas to expand upon, embellishing it with experiences and dreams of my own.

R. M. Hanson Artist Statement:
Imagine you are watching two beautiful, love-struck twenty-somethings run hand in hand along the seaside at sunset. Their giggles drift over the soft breeze while they gaze adoringly into each other’s eyes, knowing there is no one else in this world they are supposed to be with. They are in perfect love. All of a sudden, they are overtaken by an enormous, mucus-covered, multi-eyed, snarling beast and torn, violently, limb from limb in a hideous cyclone of fangs and tentacles. The shore is stained crimson. Entrails, brain matter and eyeballs litter the spattered, gore encrusted sand. This scenario is the inspiration for my work.

*Correction! I am apparently an idiot who misunderstood the rules, as it turns out my shirt will NOT be printed and sold in stores. A bummer, but I still get a bunch of sweet swag, and my gratitude toward all of you who supported still burns in my veins!!! THANK YOU!

Results are in! I have officially been selected as the second Runner-up in the men's design Public Works competition! Revenant Film Festival Official Poster

So one of the projects I have just recently completed was creating the official poster for the Revenant Film Festival!
My good man Geoff at Revenant Magazine hit me up a while back, and here is the monster we have created!

This project was a fuckin' blast to do, and I am pretty pleased with the way things came out. Below are a few process sketches and color-ups, and I wanted to work in an homage to Forrest J. Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine covers, so that was fun too. Anyway, if you can make it up to Seattle for this momentous, gory, brain-splattering festival of Undead Cinema, get info and tickets HERE! And this is what I had originally intended as the style, but when it was in process I knew it was just going to be too goddamn muddy and confusing, so I reworked the sketch and colored it up in a more graphic style for the final. I hate how this one looks, except for the blood and guts, they look alright. Too dark and confusing on the rest.

So, coming up on the 6th of the month is the "This is the End" group show being held at the Alternative Cafe in Seaside, CA. It is being curated by Joshua Graves, owner and operator of The Creep Machine. I was very fortunate to be in his last endeavor, "Attack of the B Movie" last April here in San Francisco, and it was an honor to be asked to participate in the new show. My piece is titled, "The Return to Darkness," and is 6"x10" and is in a big, elaborate frame (I will post a pic of it once I get a good one at the show) and is being sold for $425.

I would have sold it for less, but once all of the framing and shipping and commission are taken out of it, there won't be much profit. But, that is not the point (at least not right now!) it is just going to be great showing work with some fairly big guns. Check out the preview site HERE! Hey Folks,

So, I am settled in San Francisco, have reliable internet, have somewhat of an idea as to how my scheduling works, and am ready to get back on the horse named "Blog." To begin with, I will wrap up a couple of tabled topics.

First, here are some images accepted into a group show in Massachusetts called "Passages of Death." The show is curated by Art and Discord, and it will be held at the Visions Art Gallery from November 1st through December 3rd. The show revolves around the ideas of death and the afterlife, so, obviously, I chose to contribute monsters, ghosts, and ghouls.

Hello Ladies and Ghouls,

So, good news. KAREN AND I GOT AN APARTMENT IN SF!!! Super kick-ass, decently affordable (by SF standards) and right in the thick of it. That being said, I am now feverishly working at my day jobs, as freelance has dried up, to make all the money I can to get my ass on the road with Miss Karen O. However, I am forcing myself to take a bit of time to get back to some of the personal projects I have been cranking on for a while, and will post some of the progress and results this weekend. I am having a great time with some good old pencil and paper, so stay tuned. Also, keep up on our new zombie blog, Zombie Nation at www.ilovetheundead.com. Darkness on the Edge of Town

I apologize for the stagnant blog lately, folks, but I am feverishly trying to find an apartment in SF with the lovely Karen O and my brain is slowly melting and leaking out of my nose from the stress. Not to mention between my two day jobs I am pulling roughly 70 hours a week. But, much beside the point. Life is kicking ass, and I want to share some of the Kick-Assness with all of you. Darkness on the Edge of Town Paranormal Radio Show. Super awesome, super spooky at times, and always hilarious. Follow Dave Schrader and Tim Dennis through their adventures in audio as they interview some of the biggest names in the paranormal field, discussing topics from U.F.O.s to cryptids, ghosts to demons, and a hell of a lot more. There is roughly two years worth of show archives, and they have recently moved to FM talk radio! Oh, and these two ghost-chasing goofballs are from Minnesota. Skeptic yet open, these guys are a blast to listen to and it makes for great entertainment while trudging through the daytime hours at work, and also while creepin' at the drawing table during the hours of darkness. Check them out, everyone, you won't regret it.

That's right, these boys are crankin' out the tunes full of death, destruction, ghouls, ghosts, vampires, and everything else that my life revolves around. I have been listening to these fellas for a while now, and have always been impressed by the artwork used on their albums, posters, and merch. So, naturally, when I found out they are DIY and hire on artists themselves, I did my best to appease the Horror Gods, and they were kind enough to give me a shot. So, I was hired to dress up their blog for them with a header, blog-separator, and a portrait of my good man, Jimmy Calabrese. Seriously, I stumbled across Davey Wong's work as a fellow supporter of AKU Wear and man, it made my day. This guy's paintings of this wicked looking ape dressed up as all kinds of Golden Era pulp archetypes are amazing, but what really caught my eye were his paintings of Hedorah, the Smog Monster from the Godzilla series. My love for the idea of Hedorah goes deep, and Davey has captured the character in an amazing light. Finished Monster Kid

This is an homage to the culture of "Monster Kids" in the 1950's and 60's. Basically they were the kids who saved all of their allowance to go see the new, low-budget horror and sci-fi flicks, bought all of the monster mags, like Famous Monsters of Filmland, and many of them went on to make their own films and to become special effects artists. I think I am one of these kids, just in a different decade. So, there you have it. I am pretty happy with the turnout.

Hello everyone, so one of the recent gigs I have acquired is designing some halloween products for PTI Group, Inc. based out of Minneapolis.

This is a Frankenstein's monster light cover concept.

This is a concept for an LED-lit set of teeth that you attach to a pumpkin.

This is the first concept for an illustration to be printed on a 3' tall luminary that was deemed "too scary" by the powers that be. The funny thing is that I toned it down a lot from the initial sketch.

This is a piece I did for a promo-book-comic thing that our good friends Joe Gillette and Ric Schuster are putting together to let the masses know about a kickass performance piece at the Soap Factory . It is at midnight on the 5th, I believe, but I am not 100% sure. I thought it was the night of the 4th of July, but the website says the 24hr performance fest starts at noon on the 5th. So, I got in touch with James Gilks of Mad Hatter Design and he liked my stuff enough to bring me into the game. This is the first piece for the magazine I have completed. David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam, The 44 Caliber Killer. I am reading a lot about these people, and it leaves me in a strange place. The crimes committed are so dispicable, but most of their life stories are so incredibly tragic. Monsters, all of them, but they were created, not born, that way. Be good to people, because karma can be a bitch. Take care of yourselves.
